I have a passion for vintage Pioneer equipment and started out initially with an SA-720 Integrated Amplifier. Now my collection has grown substantially and I have a good understanding of what Pioneer set out to achieve and how they designed their pieces. Most of these still rival if not out perform any modern day amplifiers, stereo systems etc due to their excellent build quality and the seemingly backwards nature of consumer electronics.
A good example of this, is taking a top of the line (TOTL) Pioneer amplifier with a well thought out and short signal path through the amplifier, high quality copper cabling, star quad grounding…. the list goes on and most of these units can be picked up for less than a new piece of stereo equipment!
The style is something we don’t see so much anymore on top of the build quality and I take great care in lifting away the 30 years or more of dirt and dust to bring the piece back to a factory, if not better than factory finish.
At times, Pioneer did cut corners with circuit design which meant some units were more unreliable than they could be and in these cases, I do my best to improve on what Pioneer designed to further lengthen the service lifetime of a unit that passes through my workshop before I’ll have to see it again.
